In 2012, Wendella established the Wendella Learning Development Center, an on-site classroom environment dedicated to setting the industry standard for training our employees in safety and security, as well as in-skills development. The Center focuses on all aspects of safety, including maritime safety, workplace safety, emergency first aid and life-saving techniques, fire prevention and environmental safety, as well as all current United States Coast Guard (USCG) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Directives. Classes are led by highly trained Wendella employees and national leaders in the maritime, safety and security industry.
Wendella employees have received numerous safety-related accolades including the USCG Meritorious Service Award; multiple U.S. Coast Guard Letters of Appreciation; and two Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) National Marine Safety Awards. Wendella leadership has served the PVA as President, as well as Chairman of the PVA Safety & Security Committee. Currently, Wendella leadership serves as President of the Chicago Harbor Safety Committee and Co-Chairman of the Southern Tip of Lake Michigan Area Maritime Security Committee (STLM AMC).
All Wendella vessels and Chicago Water Taxis are federally documented and are inspected and certified annually by the USCG for passenger service. They are operated by U.S. Merchant Marine Officers, licensed and credentialed by the USCG, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
